Biographical Highlights

Alex Avery is director of research and education with the Center for Global Food Issues at Hudson Institute. Prior to joining Hudson in 1994, he was a McKnight research fellow at Purdue University, where he worked to develop drought-resistant sorghum varieties for the Sudan of Africa.

Since joining the Center in 1994, Alex has represented the Center at the 1996 United Nations World Food Summit in Rome.

The Center for Global Food Issues looks at agricultural policy from a global perspective, with reference to both economic and environmental impacts.

Publications and Media Exposure

Avery is the co-author of “Farming to Sustain the Environment,” Hudson Briefing Paper No. 190, (Hudson, May 1996).

He is the author of a new peer-reviewed study documenting that nitrates in drinking water do not cause the infamous “blue baby syndrome” in infants (“Infantile Methemoglobinemia: Reexamining the Role of Drinking Water Nitrates,” Environmental Health Perspectives, July 1999).

Alex has written on agricultural, food safety, and regulatory issues for major newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Washington Times, New York Post, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and the Des Moines Register. Alex has also been published in USA Today magazine, Regulation magazine, Feed Management, Wester Producer, and scientific publications such as Environmental Health Perspectives and the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

In addition to his publications, Alex has appeared on Fox News, CNNfn, Showtime, and has spoken to a wide range of groups, including the Australian Weed Science Society, American Veterinary Medical Association, American Phytopathological Society, and many industry and university audiences around the world.
