Center Director an Authority for Vegan Activists
January 10, 2007
We’d not thought it likely, but I have become a recognized authority for vegan activists. In a recent post on “Feeding the World”, the Vegan Society quotes me at the top of the page as justification for “going vegan.” You can see the “report” here.
They do quote me accurately when I say “The world must create five billion vegans in the next several decades, or triple its total farm output without using more land.”
But other than this quote, their analysis is a little skewed (as if that’s a surprise for an advocacy group). For example, the vegans correctly note that most of what cattle eat is indigestible by humans (roughly three fourths of every pound of U.S. beef is from human-inedible calories from grass, hay, food processing waste, etc.). But they then claim that “land currently used to graze cattle and other ruminants is almost invariably suitable for growing trees.” Are we to eat trees? No, they say we should grow “health-giving fruits and nuts” on former cattle pastures.
Anyone for “nut T-bone” or fruit burger? Neither are we.
